So Serena Williams was recently the subject of a Rolling Stone profile written by Stephen Rodrick. She was interviewed a few months ago for the piece, during which she said commented on the Steubenville rape (CONTENT ALERT: REALLY STUPID COMMENT AHEAD):
“Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you: don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”
Also, these two great articles in Slate about how crappy it is to be a woman…well kinda. The first is about the recent satirical video ‘Bitchy Resting Face’ and how it’s only funny because women are actually expected to always be genial and happy. The second is a note on female versus male academics and the price that babies pay to each group. While women’s careers tend to be negatively affected by having children, men’s careers seem to benefit. Oh the wonders of the universe.
